My darlings! HAPPY FRIDAY! Today I want to share with you how I stay motivated and focused. These two words have defined my life and continue to shape how I approach and how do things.
I never came from a well-off background, but my mother and father worked their butts off to ensure that we had what we needed. I grew up with my mind made up that I was going to be different, I was always going to have positive energy and a positive outlook on life. I decided that I am going to keep trying and trying and be good at anything I set my heart and soul on. I knew that education was a big deal, not only to my parents but for me as well. set out to ensure that I went to and finished school, and just last October, I graduated with my MBA in Strategic Management. This reminds me of this quote;
You can start late
And still succeed.
It is easy to throw your hands up and give up, but I urge you to keep going. Your BIG break is closer than you think. So how do I stay motivated and focused?
Look Good, Feel Good.
I have come to believe that when I look good, I feel good. I decide what looking good is to me. Today it could be a fully done face and tomorrow it could be my bare face. It could be me in heels or me in flats. I decide what that is and I have made peace with it. This is because it makes me feel good. I stay motivated because I have taken control of my appearance and my demeanor and my reactions and I have made God my countenance.
Take it to God and Go to Sleep.
I stay focused because I have a bigger boss looking out for me. When the going gets tough, I simply pray about it. I mean I talk to God about it. No fancy words, no shaaddaa moments, just heart-felt conversations. In Christ I have found rest. I have realized that I do change my situations by worrying. I have fully understood what scripture means when it says, IN all things (not for all things) GIVE THANKS.
Set Realistic and Achievable Goals
So I want to live in my own house. I know my budget (for now its small, but I am trusting God for a two loaves and five fish kind of miracle). I know my timelines. I know it can be done. I have set realistic targets and taken realistic steps towards raising money for this project. For example, I used to enjoy soup at our work cafeteria, it costs 8QAR whish is about Ksh 200. I would have this 4 times a week making it Ksh 800. This is one bag of cement. So since I still want to enjoy soup, I now buy cup a soup that is Ksh 100 and comes with 4 sachets inside, saving me Ksh 700. Does not look like much, but to me it is. By setting achievable goals, I am not setting myself up for failure of depression from not being able to accomplish my goals, or getting stuck midway. Check out my YouTube Video on how to set goals.
Seek out Joy
I now seek the things that give me joy. Period. i stopped doing things to fit in, talking to people just for the sake of conversations. I stopped entertaining people who are with me during the good times and duck when they see my flaws or shortcomings. I seek Joy knowingly. This has kept me focused on the things that really matter and on the people that really matter. Yaani, seeking Joy has made me purge my closet so many times, that I am at that point of having specific wardrobe items made for me. Kirk Franklin once said, “Happiness might need something to happen, Joy comes from within.” Do not let anyone or anything steal your Joy, says Joy (Pun intended).
Celebrate your wins
To stay focused and motivated, I celebrate my wins. When I manage to meet my monthly savings goal, I am so happy!!! I do a dance and have some tea. You guys know that nice feeling you get when you sip well made tea that has just the right ratio or milk to water? Guys! The sweet aroma of Kenyan tea with a dash of cardamon? WOW! Anyway, find a way to celebrate your wins. You did it! You deserve it.
Remind Yourself Why You Started
If everything else fails, remind yourself why you started! That fire that you had when you started your natural hair journey or your weight loss or weight gain journey, reignite it. Go back to that place and remind yourself why it mattered. Reassure yourself that you have what it takes to get there.
